Is it absolutely necessary to use zippo lighter fluid? Or can plain charcoal lighter fluid work just as well…without side effects

OK, I know absolutely nothing about Zippo lighters and therein lies the problem. My cousin is shipping off to basic training tomorrow and he gave me his old, beat-up Zippo. My question is how do you refill a Zippo with fuel? My cousin told me to use Ronsonol, because it’s an older lighter that doesn’t have the butane port in the bottom. When I click the wheel in sparks, so I know it can’t be the flint. Please give me a step-by-step process of what to do.

i need to refill my zippo lighter and was wondering what type of fluid i need? will any lighter fluid do or do i need specific lighter fluids or will grill lighter fluids work to?

It isn’t the brand zippo but it’s that style someone told me you can use the same lighter fluid that you use for a grill, but that didn’t sound right.

Am i able to use charcoal grill lighter fluid to refill my zippo?

the fuel is pretty expensive, i think that kerosene is a cheap substitute since that’s what alcohol lamps run on, and the principle behind both devices are the same.

I refilled the brand new zippo and when i was done, it wouldnt spark anymore. Does this have something to do with the fluid getting on the flint or something??

can zippo lighters be refilled with butane?

Hi everyone,
I’m having trouble refilling my zippo lighter. I bought a can of zippo butane fuel but its got this weird pressure system i cant figure out, sort of like a hairspray can, but the nozzle is impossible to figure out how the fuel actually comes out.
The directions on the can are cryptic and dont help at all. Do you hold it upright and stick it in the zippo padding, or do you hold it downwards? I tried both ways and got my fingers frozen for some reason.
Looking for advice from someone who actually knows what refiller I’m talking about.
Someone help!
